Component Group. This group includes all materials that are used in the construction of a ship's components and systems. This category includes: engines, propellers, generators, ballast tank, engines, refrigeration equipment, steering systems, accommodation, cargo tanks, life support, ballast water tanks, bulkheads, frames, keels, strakes, fittings, and couplings and keel bolts etc.
Material Group. This subgroup may be broken further down by the following groups: steel, aluminium, titanium, other metals (non-ferrous materials), wood, composites, glass, cork and plastics. Those materials which are used in the construction of hulls, bulkheads, frames, keels, strakes, joints, fittings, and machinery, should be included here.
Construction material. Construction material is any material used in the building of ships. The construction material may be divided into the following groups: steels, aluminium, titanium, other metals (non-ferrous materials), wood, composites, glass, cork and plastics. The material used should be indicated by a detail code.
The second and final group of codes cover the component parts of the materials. These codes are specific for the individual components. This allows one to identify the material used for the individual components even when the materials are not related to the other codes of the same subgroup.
The material codes are grouped into five main material groups and are further broken down by the type of material. Each code identifies a specific material and the type of material it is made from.
At the material level, there are currently four groups of materials. These groups are meant to cover a range of material types that are used in the construction of the ship, e.g. steel, aluminium, composite materials and wood. The materials may be related to the subgroups, but have not yet been assigned any detail code. These material groups can be used in general to identify the materials of the ship and can be used to provide additional information when the broken down materials have been split to the detail level.
